Teflon was discovered accidentally in 1938 by an engineer by the name of Roy Plunkett, while he was working in New Jersey for DuPont, Roy was attempting to make a new refrigerant fluid.
The experiment to make the new refrigerant fluid was conducted by injecting tetrafluoroethylene gas in a bottle and hoping a useful flourocarbonic chemical would be produced. When Roy began injecting the flouroethylene gas into the container he saw the signal that represented the amount of gas rise then suddenly signal empty. This was a surprise to Roy, so he decided to open the container and find out what had occured.Much to his surprise he saw that the container was coated in a white waxy substance that was oddly slippery.
Later after many more experiments Roy discovered that the Iron inside the reaction chamber was the catalyst of the reaction that formed the PTFE. Kinetic Chemicals, a major company at the time patented the PTFE in 1941 and later in 1945 registered the trademark to Teflon.
